“We will give out our cocoa farms to illegal miners to do galamsey” – Disappointed Farmers lament

Cocoa farmers of Awiefutu, a farming community in the Wassa Amenfi West Municipality of the Western Region, have revealed that, they will be forced to sell their cocoa farms to illegal miners to do their ‘galamsey activities’.

The Awiefutu community is one of the Cocoa prone communities in Ghana. They produce huge tons of cocoa to support the country’s economy but have been left to rot in terms of road development.

According to the disappointed farmers, the only bridge that helps them convey their farm produce, especially cocoa beans has collapsed and abandoned for years, hence making it difficult to bring their cocoa beans home to purchasing clerks(PCs) to buy.

“You have to carry your cocoa beans from farm to home for long hours, due to the lack of bridge”, some farmers revealed.

They added in an interview with the media that, because of the above-mentioned situation, buyers have stopped coming to the community, therefore their cocoa beans are rotting.

The Assembly member for the Awiefutu community, Hon Amaleba on his part disclosed that, the problem has been reported severally to the Amenfi West assembly but to no avail.

The situation is so pathetic that, the people of Awiefutu have been cut off from Prestea Nkwanta. The people use to go to Prestea Nkwanta to do their market but it is now impossible for the residents because of the collapsed bridge.
