Tamale: Six-storey building at UDS collapses after rainstorm

A six-storey building under construction at the city campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS) in Tamale collapsed yesterday, May 6, 2023, shortly after a heavy downpour.

No one was in the structure at the time of the collapse and no casualties were recorded. Some residents of nearby houses said they suspect poor construction work, with one resident saying “a man passing by some hours before the collapse advised me to keep my children away from the structure because he feared the building may collapse soon.”

The city campus of the UDS is one of the two campuses of the University in Tamale. The campus runs mainly graduate programmes.

The campus also hosts the newly established School of Business which runs some undergraduate programmes in business, as well as the center for distance education. Workers at the construction site said they left the building shortly before it collapsed, and no injuries or deaths were recorded.

The Director of Communications at the University for Development Studies, Abdul Hayi Moomen, told GBC News in an interview that, “investigations will be conducted into the matter to determine the cause of the collapse.”

The collapsed building is one of two six-storey structures under construction on campus.

GBC News has learnt the two projects are being undertaken by the same contractor.
