Kumawu by-Election: Meet the top 3 parliamentary Candidates

Since the Kumawu Constituency became vacant after the passing of MP Philip Basoah, political parties have been busy either electing or acclaiming their respective candidate to be battle ready for the May 23, 2023 by-election.

The elections, which some watchers believe will be an assessment of the government or the acceptability of change by the opposition, is gaining ground as the constituency feels the heat of political activities.

A fortnight ago, roads in the constituency were being worked on, stalled projects getting some energy in them and promise flying left, right and center all to woo the electorates there.

As it is always said in Ghana, the declaration of results on the day will determine the smoothness levels of the political parties as each says they will win.

Kwasi Amankwa-NDC

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) is presenting Kwasi Amankwa popularly known as ‘Tom Cee’ as the party’s parliamentary candidate for the May 23, 2023 by-election which will be held in the Kumawu Constituency of the Ashanti region.

Kwasi Amankwa is a direct nephew of Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, NDC Presidential Candidate hopeful. Relatively unknown to political watchers outside the area, he is considered a popular guy on the grounds. He has several business interests and has also worked in the mining sector. He lived abroad as well. He is also the grandson of the late Kumawu Member of Parliament (MP) Philip Atta Basoah

Ernest Yaw Anim -NPP

The ruling New Patriotic Party(NPP) is being presented by Ernest Yaw Anim, a failed District Chief Executive(DCE) aspirant as the New Parliamentary Candidate for the area. He is a chartered accountant by profession and was a senior Accountant at Vanguard Properties Development, Ghana. He had previously also held several positions at Vanguard including Financial Controller where he managed an annual budget of over $4m on four different projects.

Mr. Anim before joining Vanguard, was an Account Officer at Millennium Development Authority Ghana.

He has also worked as Assistant Manager, Tax Services for Nobisfields. He was a graduate assistant at Ohio University Economics Department and holds the following qualifications:

Master of Financial Economics at Ohio University, Professional Certificate in Accounting from ACCA, and B.Com from the University Of Cape Coast. He is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA)

Nana Kwaku Duah-INDEPENDENT CANDIDATE

Nana Kwaku Duah a businessman has been described by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as a sponsored candidate by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to distract the NPP victory. He was a staunch member of the NPP but feels the party has not done enough for the constituency to deserve their votes. The rich businessman left the NPP to contest in the 2020 elections against the NPP candidate pulling 11698 votes as against Philip Basoah’s 14,960 vote

Mr. Duah is also a nephew to the Paramount Chief of Kumawu, Barimah Tweneboah Koduah.

The Electoral Commission has slated 2nd May 2023 to 5th May 2023 between the hours of 9 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 5 pm on each day to receive nominations of the candidates at the Kumawu District Office of the Commission.
