GES bans 2023 BECE unqualified
GES bans registration of unqualified JHS students for 2023 BECE. The practice where some public and private schools register students in JHS1 and JHS2 as candidates is one crime that the GES has always warned schools, heads, and parents about, but this seems not to be yielding the needed cooperation from stakeholders who are expected to be responsible.
In other instances, students who are registered by schools are sourced from other schools.
Thus, a head teacher in School A may agree to register a student from another school, says School B, for the BECE. This is also not permitted, since a qualified candidate must have attended the school he or she is registered for.
In some instances, parents move their wards from one geographical location to the order for the purpose of registering the candidates for the BECE when the student is not qualified to be in JHS3.
To halt the practice entirely, the management of the Ghana Education Service (GES) has banned the registration of unqualified public and private Junior High Schools (JHS) effective this registration period.
The directive was communicated by the GES through a letter to all schools.
In the letter sighted by GhanaWebNews.Org, the GES did state that it is illegal to register unqualified students for the 2023 BECE for School Candidates.
“Management of the Ghana Education Services (GES) wishes to remind all heads of basic schools (private and public) that registration of JHS1 and JHS2 students for BECE for School Candidates is illegal,” the Service said in the letter.
Citing the rules and regulations governing the conduct of the national examination, GES added that “the registration of candidates for the 2023 BECE for School is strictly for students in Junior High School Form three (JHS3) only.”
“It is against the Ghana Education Service (GES) and West African Examinations Council’s (WAEC) rules and regulations to register JHS1 and JHS2 students either in their own school or in a different school to write the BECE,” it noted.
The GES has further stated that any Headteacher in private or public schools found to be engaged in this act will be sanctioned.
The letter further indicated that “There will be an audit of BECE registered candidates immediately after the registration exercise. Any student found to have been registered illegally will have his/her registration nullified by the West African Examinations Council,”
“The period for the registration of the candidates which will be set by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) should be strictly complied with to avoid late registration,” the GES management stated in the letter to school heads.
The 2023 BECE registration is expected to end on April 28, 2023 for the examination scheduled for August 7th to 11th, 2023 across the country. The examination will be conducted once and for all candidates who are in school as well as those who are re-siting the examination.
“The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) for School and Private Candidates, 2023 will be administered from Monday, August 7, 2023, to Friday, August 11, 2023,” According to WAEC.
