New Delhi: Urinary bladder cancer occurs when the cells in the bladder, a hollow and balloon-shaped organ grow uncontrollably. The bladder is placed in the lower part of the abdomen and stores urine, and when cancer strikes, the lining of its muscular wall begins to wither away.

According to a study conducted by Action Bladder Cancer, UK, 25 per cent of most cases are diagnosed at a very late stage, particularly in women, causing life-threatening complications. Doctors also say that around 75 per cent of early-stage bladder cancers come back.

Even though bladder cancer is a relatively rare form of cancer, people with this cancer should be vigilant about following up with their healthcare providers.

Bladder cancer does not always trigger too many symptoms and that is why a lot of people get diagnosed when it is too late. Here are a few common symptoms you should not ignore and consult your doctor if you notice them.

Blood in urine

Blood in the urine is one of the most commonly visible symptoms of bladder cancer. Also known as haematuria, the condition is usually painless and can be noticed easily.

Doctors say if you see streaks of blood in your urine or the blood turning urine brown, it needs to be checked immediately.

However, according to Bladder Cancer Advocacy Network, women are less likely to pay attention to hematuria as they usually associate blood in pee with common gynecological issues.

Pain and burning

Like Urinary Tract Infections, there are a few irritating urination symptoms associated with bladder cancer. The most common sign of these is pain and a burning sensation while you pee.

Also known as dysuria, the burning or stinging sensation while urinating happens mostly in men.

Unintended weight loss

One of the early signs of bladder cancer is unintended weight loss and loss of appetite, which happens when the healthy cells die, and the immune system becomes weak.

Swelling in feet

Doctors say your bladder and kidneys work together to produce urine. Pee from your kidneys drains into the bladder, which is lined with tissue called urothelium, which stretches when your bladder fills with pee and collapses when it is empty.

However, when cancer happens, there is pressure on the kidneys, which begins their malfunction as well, causing a lack of proper blood circulation in your feet, leading to swelling.

Pain in the back

Bladder cancer causes lower back pain when it begins to grow in the body. The pain is typically only on one side of the back, but it can be centrally located.

Lower back pain might occur once the tumors increase in size or cancer cells start to spread to other parts of your body.

Other symptoms

Doctors say when cancer grows large or spreads beyond the bladder to other parts of the body, there are a few symptoms you have, most of which include:

Not being able to urinate
Pain in the tummy
Pain in bones
Body tenderness
Feeling tired all the time
