Common reason why you can die while asleep

GOOD NEWS for National Service Personnel(NSP)

The death of a loved one is one of the most traumatic events one can experience. One can be in the middle of an activity one moment, and gone the next. When an unexpected death occurs, those left behind are left with the questions of why and how. While it may not provide any comfort to the survivors, understanding why and how a loved one has died may help provide some closure.

According to webmd, One of the most common reasons people die while sleeping is due to a sudden cardiac death, or cardiac arrest. This occurs when the person’s heart suddenly stops beating. This can be caused by medical conditions such as arrhythmia, closing of the coronary arteries, genetic heart defects, or other conditions such as scarring, inflammation, or sudden electrical discharges. It is not uncommon for a person to die suddenly in their sleep if they have a heart condition which has gone undiagnosed, as it is often difficult to recognize symptoms due to the body being in a relaxed state.

Another common reason people perish while sleeping is from low blood sugar. When a person has diabetes, they are unable to regulate the levels of glucose in their bloodstream, and if they fall too low, it can trigger a condition known as hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. This is particularly dangerous when sleeping, as the body is unable to alert the brain to the sudden drop in glucose levels. If hypoglycemia is left untreated, it can lead to coma or death.

Sleep apnea is another condition which may lead to a person’s demise while they are asleep. This condition occurs when a person has difficulty breathing while they are asleep, as the airways become blocked. In severe cases, oxygen deprivation can take place, leading to breathing problems and, in some cases, death.

Other less common, but equally deadly causes of death while sleeping include pulmonary embolism, stroke, and accidental asphyxiation. Pulmonary embolism is a blood clot in the lungs which can obstruct blood flow, leading to death. A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is cut off, resulting in the death of brain cells and, in some cases, death. Accidental asphyxiation can occur when a pillow, blanket, or even the person’s own body is pressed up against their mouth or nose, blocking airways.

Finally, there is the possibility that a death while sleeping is the product of an underlying medical condition or disease which has gone undiagnosed or untreated. While it is impossible to provide specifics given the variables at play, it is important to remember that many medical conditions, including heart problems, diabetes, stroke, and cancer can all lead to little warning and death while sleeping.

It is impossible to predict when an individual will pass away. While this can be a difficult concept to grapple with, knowing that the death is usually caused by conditions beyond a person’s control can be comforting. If a loved one does succumb to a condition in their sleep, understanding the cause can ease the burden of grief for those left behind.
