Dr  Mabel Abudu urges Ghanaians to vaccinate their pets to avoid rabies

The Ashanti Regional Director of the veterinary Service Dr. Mabel Abudu has urged pet owners to vaccinate their pets especially dogs and cats to avoid the spread of rabies in the country.

Dr. Mabel Abudu was speaking at Reginal Risk communication and social mobilization subcommittee meeting held at the Ashanti Regional Health Directorate to access the rabies situation and response in the Ashanti.

She said so far 74 cases had been reported with 38 tested while human involvement is 77 from 2018 to 2022 but 5 cases has been reported in this year 2023 with one tested positive in the Ashanti Region.

She added that rabies cases in the region were a problem for Public Health in both the medical and veterinary fields and as such several efforts were being made to ensure that animals especially dogs and cats were been vaccinated throughout the region, particularly the affected districts and municipals, as well as pet owners.

“We are also sensitizing the public about the post exposure prophylaxis, that if you are bitten by a rabies dog, you need to report to near by health facility as early as possible,” she added.

Dr. Maybe Abudu then advised pet owners and pet shops to get their animals vaccinated with immediate effect.

Rabies is a deadly virus which spreads to people from the saliva of infected animals. The disease usually spreads through an animal bite. Animals most likely to spread rabies include dogs, bats, coyotes, foxes, skunks, and raccoons.

Persons infected with Rabies experience one or more symptoms such as headache, neck pain, nausea, fever, fear of water, anxiety, agitation, abnormal tingling sensations or pain at the wound site.
