A despicable incident occurred in Kwazulu Natal, where a 32-year-old man who had been run over by a truck was left stranded and denied assistance for several hours. The reason for this was that the passers-by recognized him as a convicted armed robber and did not want to associate with him. This shocking act of callousness is truly unacceptable, and highlights the depths to which some people can sink.
The incident was brought to the attention of the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) who promptly arrived at the scene. They found the injured man lying in the middle of the R102 between Verulam and Canelands, with no one willing to help him. Upon questioning the man, he revealed that he had been knocked down by a truck four hours prior to their arrival. The driver had fled the scene and left him to die.
What is particularly disturbing about this incident is that the injured man had been arrested seven years ago as a getaway driver in a crime committed in the Riverview area. He was sentenced to fifteen years in prison and was only released on parole in 2022. Clearly, the community had not forgotten his criminal past, and they chose to let him suffer instead of showing him basic human decency.
Despite pleading for assistance from 12:00 pm, it was not until someone who knew him arrived and moved him closer to the Central Business District that he was finally able to get the help he needed.
By this time, he had sustained a broken leg and other bodily injuries.
