Two people from the same family lost their lives in two separate incidents of tiger attacks in Karnataka’s Kodagu.

Tiger killed two people from the same family in two separate incidents within 24 hours in Karnataka. The attacks took place at K Badaga village on the periphery of the Nagarahole National Park, a tiger reserve in Kodagu district.

In the first attack, 18- year-old Chetan was killed by a tiger and his half-eaten body was found at K Badaga village in Ponnampet taluk of Kodagu on Sunday evening. In the second incident, a tiger attacked 75-year-old Raju on Monday morning at around 7 am.

The body of deceased Raju was traced 200 meters away from where Chetan’s body was discovered.

Forest officials are patrolling nearby villages and veterinarians are on standby to sedate the tiger once sighted.

Villagers complained that a tiger has often been sighted in the vicinity and used to prey on domestic animals. After the two deaths, residents in the villages of Choorikadu, Palleri, Kutta, Nalkeri and adjoining areas in Ponnampet taluk were wary about a tiger prowling in the vicinity.

CONGRESS ATTACKS K’TAKA GOVT OVER ‘NEGLIGENCE’
Speaking to India Today, Congress leader AS Ponnanna said, “Two people have lost their lives in an attack by a tiger. This is not the first time. In the last few months, more than eight people have lost their lives in tiger attacks.”

Talking about the man-animal conflict in Kodagu, he said, “Tigers and elephants are all over coffee estates, endangering lives of estate owners and labourers. Today, two people have lost their lives, purely due to the negligence of the forest department.”

“There appears to be no action by state government or district officials to resolve this conflict,” the Congress leader said.

Congress leader AS Ponnanna also called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
