Government has been urged to pay equal attention to promoting adult education as it is doing for Free Senior High School( Free SHS) and Technical and vocational Training.

The principal of VESC College in the Oforikrom Municipality of the Ashanti region, Mr Nim Brefo Clive in an interview with Silver FM’s AKWADAA NYAME says empowering the larger population through literacy is critical for building a productive society.

VSEC College is providing literacy services for adults in some parts of the country.

Mr. Nim Brefo wants the government to invest more resources into adult education by given financial assistance to private institutions like VSEC to help break the poverty cycle.

He disclosed this during the 5th Anniversary celebration of the college at Anloga Junction this weekend at the graduation ceremony of more than 20 adults who successfully completed their studies at VSEC College.

VSEC College also trains young people in music and how to play instruments.

Mr Nim Brefo says there are millions of Ghanaian illiterate adults to be covered.

“We would love to expand. We would love to do more, we would love to touch the lives of every single person that needs to join this school to be able to read and write,” he said.

He then pleaded with the government and other corporate institutions to collaborate for the common good of Ghanaians.

“We can’t do this all by ourselves so we just call on other corporate institutions and the government in particular. Let’s see how we can collaborate together to help reach out to the masses and be able to eradicate poverty from the minds of the people that have been entrusted into our hands,” he stressed.

Some of the students who has passed through the college expressed their gratitude to the school authorities.

They are happy with the gains they have made so far, as they can now read and write.

“One day one of my friends said that there is some programme that I should come and join but when I went, it’s very good. I learnt how to read, how to write; even as at now I am talking, I can read my Bible and understand everything”, one of the students said.

Another woman also said, “I can now do my children home work for them. I can write and endorse my own cheque at bank”.
