A fatal accident along the Lira-Soroti road has claimed the life of a traffic police officer and a boda boda rider.

The deceased are: police constable Muhindo Micah and Bob Odongo died after a Ford Ranger Reg No UG 0337G, belonging to the Ministry of Internal Affairs rammed into a motorcycle Bajaj Boxer reg no UEU 841C.

Traffic and Road safety spokesperson Faridah Nampiima says the driver of the government car identified as Oginere John has since been arrested for over speeding.

She explains that Oginere also police officer attached to the Ministry of Internal Affairs was moving from Soroti to Lira when he lost control of his car and knocked the boda boda rider alongside two pedestrians at Adwila. The car that was moving at a break-neck speed proceeded to hit the traffic officer, killing him on the spot.

The pedestrians sustained injuries while the rider, died on the way to lira regional referral hospital.

Nampiima has cautioned all road users to be vigilant while using the roads and drive responsibly especially during this festive season.

The 2021 Uganda Police Annual Crime Report says there was a 42-percent increase in the number of road crashes from 12, 249 in 2020 to 17,443 in 2021. More than 3,000 crashes were fatal, and 4,616 survived with minor injuries.

The report says on average, Uganda loses approximately 10 people per day due to road crashes.
