A horrific accident at Ata ne Ata on Saturday claimed the lives of eleven persons, leaving Asutifi South District in the Ahafo Region in a state of mourning.

An eyewitness reported that one victim passed away at the St. Elizabeth Catholic Hospital in Hwidiem while the other ten victims perished instantly.

The same hospital is treating four additional patients who are in critical condition.

The event happened Saturday night at 7 o’clock in the rural town of Ata ne Ata, which is located on the Hwidiem-Goaso route.

Enerst Karim, an assemblyman from Wuramuso, told Graphic Online that the event occurred when a tricycle at Ata ne Ata attempted to pass another one while carrying the victims and some bundles of ginger.

According to him, the tricycle overturned, scattering the ginger bags and its occupants onto the middle of the road.

According to Mr. Karim, a KIA vehicle driving from the Goaso side of the road struck them, killing 10 people instantly and injuring several more.

The victims, who are largely from Nkaseim, Kwamo, and Ohiatua and are between the ages of 11 and 17, he said, were returning from the hamlet of Obengkrom after visiting there to gather ginger.

Even though the police had hosted numerous forums to urge the public to stop using tricycles to transport passengers, Mr. Karim continued, the warnings had been met with resistance.
