GNAT, NAGRAT & CCT send message to teachers on strike action
The Pre-tertiary Unions in Education have sent a message to teachers on the ongoing nationwide strike action.
In a statement, the three Teacher Unions thus; the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Coalition of Concerned Teachers, Ghana (CCT-GH) have called on its members to remain calm as they make final determination on the strike action.
According to the Union Leaders of the three teacher unions, they have met today, Thursday, 10th November, 2022 in Accra with their lawyers to seek advice about the National Labour Commission ruling.
They explained that, the consultation on the ongoing strike shall continue tomorrow, Friday, 11th November, 2022 for a final decision to be taken.
“Members are therefore to stay calm for the final declaration by close of tomorrow on the strike action.”
Meanwhile, the Unions noted unequivocally that, till then, ALUTA CONTINUA, SOLIDARITY FOREVER.
Earlier, the National Labour Commission had issued a directive on Pre-tertiary Teacher Unions Strike against the appointment of Dr. Eric Nkansah as Director-General of Ghana Education Service (GES) and contract extension of Deputy Director-General Mr. Anthony Boateng among other substantive issues.
In a statement, the National Labour Commission said, on Wednesday, 9th November, 2022, the disputing parties appeared before the National Labour Commission for a hearing of the matter of declaration of strike by the Pre-tertiary
Teacher Unions.
The Commission noted that, the Unions failed to follow due process before embarking on the strike.
The National Labour Commission has therefore directed the Pre-tertiary Unions to call off the strike immediately.
According to NLC, Government must engage the Unions over the issues in dispute for amicable resolution.
Meanwhile, the National Labour Commission also directed that, the aggrieved parties must report on 16th November, 2022 at 11:00 am to address the issues.
But, the striking teacher unions believe that, the directive from the National Labour Commission (NLC) is premature as they engage their lawyers on the matter for legal advice for next line of action.
