GREEN GHANA 2022: Ashanti Region to plant Over 1 Million Seedlings

The Ashanti regional chapter of the Ghana Forestry Commission on 20th May 2020 commenced the distribution of seedlings as part of the Green Ghana Project.

So far, 1,717,000 have been distributed within the region; an effort geared towards hitting and perhaps exceeding a target of 4million trees apportioned for the region this year.

1,044,000 seedlings have been dispensed to forest reserve areas and 673,000 to off-reserve zones.

At a press briefing held today, Mr. Augustine Gyedu (Regional Manager for Ghana Forestry Commission) announced that distribution is still ongoing, detailing that they are planting 1,836,000 at off-reserve areas.

He added that 2,164,000 seedlings have also been marked for forest reserve areas across the region.

Among the species include timber trees, ornamental plants, fruit trees, shade trees etc.

Mr. Gyedu brought to note that the seedlings have been made available at all their district offices, district assemblies and that government has paid for all the seedlings.

He indicated in his statement that the move forms part of government’s efforts aimed at mitigating climate change in the country.

Effective monitoring exercise will be conducted within the region after the holding of a commemoration ceremony slated for 10 June 2022.
