When night falls at Goroo, a suburb within Aful Nkwata electoral area in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly of the Ashanti Region of Ghana, the atmosphere gets charged.

Walking on the community’s principal street, one is greeted by sounds of music emanating from shops that dot the shoulders of the road. Observing from afar, it appears all is well with the people living there.

Residents who live on that stretch of the road have for years being crying over the poor nature of their road and drainage system.

They are not only tired battling dust on the road but also concerned with how the road networks are rendered un-motorable whenever it rains. Drivers who ply on the Road are equally worried:

“We have to change our vehicles’ shock absorbers every two weeks. The road is really having a toll on us,” says driver Kanayo.

Sixty five (65)-year-old woman who gave her name as Hajia Fati and a food vendor who sold at the roadside, said her concern had to do with battling the dust.

“For the dust issue, it disturbs me as a food vendor. I have to be cleaning and washing every minute,” says worried Hajia.

A furniture worker, Tofiq shares Hajia’s concern. “I have been here all my life. The road has been the same since. During the dry season we battle the dust and whenever the rains set in, the situation worsens.”

Alhaji Burger, leader of the community speaking to *SILVER FM’s AKWADAA NYAME* said “drivers fear to use the road when it rains because the main bridge connecting the community is not in good shape and easily gets flooded.”

The unsafe situation at Goroo is made worse by broken bridge constructed on the way preventing free flow of rain water while the new site is also made worse because of a sawmill factory situated at the roadside.

“Our lives are endangered. Anytime it rains, for even 10 minutes, the land gets flooded because the water in the gutter halts and returns to flood our homes.

The residents called on appropriate authorities to give a listening ear to their plea and come to their aid to avoid any inconveniences.
