16-Year-Old Baby Thief Arrested

A 16-year-old girl has been arrested in Masindi, Uganda, for allegedly stealing a three-day-old baby girl from the local hospital.

The suspect, a resident of Nyabyeya village in Masindi district’s Budongo sub-county, pretended to be an attendant at Masindi General Hospital’s maternal ward.

She then approached a new mother called Sarah Nanjinga, 25, and urged her to hand over her infant so she could relax.

On April 28, 2022, Nanjinga, who had just delivered her baby through C-section at the hospital, gave over the infant to the stranger.

The culprit eventually vanished with the infant, forcing Nanjinga to file a report with Masindi Central Police Station.

Dr. Felix Twinomugisha, the Medical Superintendent at Masindi General Hospital, stated that the ward managers were unaware that the suspect, who had apparently spent four days in the ward, was posing as an attendant.

He urged moms to exercise cautious when visiting the district’s different health institutions with their newborn babies, noting that there are numerous individuals who prey on newborns.

According to Julius Hakiza, the Albertine district police spokesperson, officers eventually apprehended the suspect from her hiding place in Nyabyeya village and arrested her along with the stolen baby.

“She is being kept at the police station as investigations continue to determine how the infant was kidnapped from Masindi hospital,” Hakiza explained.

Hakiza said the suspect will appear in court on allegations of infant theft once police investigations are complete.
