Mr. Alexander Ayatha, Deputy Director of National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in charge of Research, monitoring and Evaluation has paid a day visit to western north region on a mission to meet stakeholders on how to reduce road crashes, Injuries and death (CIDs) on the road.

He visited the regional police command, to interacted with DCOP AKRASI MENSAH Regional Police Commander and ASP Juliana Forson regional MTTD commander followed to RCC to meet the Minister Hon. Richard Ebba Obeng and finally ended at the DVLA office.

Mr Alexander Ayatha disclosed that, the rate at which road crashes occuring in the country was very alarming and there’s the need for attention.

He used the opportunity to announced that there will be an award from the presidency to best performing region with less cases of road accidents this year.

He added that, it is the wish of national road safety authority NRSA that road accidents will reduce this year in the country.

Mr Alexander Ayatha commended the staff of western north regional national road safety authority for the tremendous work done notwithstanding being a new region with less logistics.

He entreated the police to always check logbooks of long distance vehicle by so doing would help them to have a rest at a point.

Mr Ayatha tasked all stakeholders to put their hands on board to protect lives.

Mr. Richard Ebba Obeng, western north regional minister on his part congratulated the road safety officers for hard work doing and urged them to continue the good work to protect lives and properties.

He made a suggestion that, national road safety authority should factor into their annual plan to involve the assembly members in various towns and communities to participate in the campaign because they knew drivers who drive recklessly on the road with all sorts of appellation at lorry stations.

Again, he promised that, all MDCEs within the region will be call for meeting to champion in the road safety campaign at the various assemblies that he challenge the authority to fix a date to that effect.

At the regional police Command, DCOP ERNEST AKRASI MENSAH admitted that, the region recorded more motor accident particular in the first quarter of this year which resulted to the death of more youths.

He attributed most of the accident to overspending, riding without helmet, overtaking, using tricycles to carry
wood.

He cautioned that, a 25 year old person according to the road safety laws does permit to drive commercial vehicle.

He promised that, his outfit in collaboration with other stakeholders will work hard to prevent road crashes and by God willing to be awarded as best performing region.

Moreover, ASP Juliana Forson regional MTTD commander appealed national road safety authority to provide the region with towing vehicle to convey broken down vehicles on the road to also prevent any accident that may cause.

At, the regional office of the Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority DVLA, manager, Mr. Robert Williams Aklamanu welcomed the entourage and said DVLA together with road safety authority and other supportive stakeholders are doing their possible best to prevent carnage on the road.

He further advice that, it’s an offence to use the any machine on the road without registration plate or personal license.

He called on them to take the opportunity of DVLA office and register, insured the vehicle in addition to road worthy.

Finally, Mr Victor kojo Bilson western north regional head of the national road safety authority gave a statistics on cases recorded.

According to him, 264 cases was recorded from January to December,2020 as compared to 325 cases in 2021.
85 people died in 2021 as against 82 in 2020.

He concluded that, 38 death had been recorded in the first quarter of 2022 against 22 death which he attributed the rise of 2022 to road accident between sprinter Bus and Metro Mass Transit bus that happened the 10 February,2022 at sefwi Anhwiaso- Tanoso in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai municipality in which 13 passengers died with 10 others injured.
