TWIFO PRASO: Residents worried as waste water from hospital pollutes stream
Residents of “New Hospital” a suburb of Twifo Praso in the Twifo Atti-Morkwa district of central region are bemoaning that, the only source of drinking is being polluted by waste water from the Twifo Praso district hospital.
According to residents, since operations of the hospital began in 2021, the only stream from which they drink has been contaminated by the liquid waste from the hospital.
They added that all the liquid waste from the mortuary, theatre and other units of the Twifo Praso district hospital drains through some drainage system around the hospital to join the Entafrewaso stream which they drink from.
A visit to communities around the hospital indicates, residents especially children often fall sick.
“This situation has also resulted in children not going to school due to several health conditions from the contaminated water”, the residents added.
They are therefore appealing to the government, NGOs and benevolent individuals to come to their aid with clean and safe drinking water for people in the community.
Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive (DCE) of Twifo Atti-morkwa, Hon Robert Agyemang Nyantakyi said, the Twifo Praso district hospital has a very big septic tank where all waste water from the hospital is channelled.
He further explained that the water that flows in the open gutters around the hospital and joins the stream are rain water but not liquid waste from the hospital as the residents claim.
Mr Peter Teye, administrator of the hospital also added that no waste water from the hospital flows into the stream.
“Waste water from the hospital is collected and stored in a reservoir which is treated for other purposes”, MrTeye said.
