Over 100 people are feared trapped after a cable bridge collapsed in Gujarat, India. The incident took place in Morbi on the Machhu river.

There were about 500 people on the bridge when it collapsed. The structure was reportedly renovated just five days ago.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to Gujarat Chief Minister and other officials regarding the accident.

He has spoken to Gujarat’s chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, requesting urgent mobilisation of teams for rescue operations. “He has asked that the situation be closely and continuously monitored, and extend all possible help to those affected,” a statement from his office said.

After the renovation, the bridge was reopened to the public on the day of the Gujarati new year – October 26.

With “urgent mobilisation” underway for those injured in the bridge collapse, two teams of National Disaster Management Force (NDRF) have been despatched to the area.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that local administration was engaging in relief work in the area alongside the two NDRF teams.

In a statement released to Twitter, Shah wrote: “I am deeply saddened by the accident in Morbi. I have spoken to Harsh Sanghvi, Minister of State for Home and other officials of Gujarat in this matter.

“Local administration is engaged in relief work with full readiness, NDRF is also reaching the spot soon. The administration has been directed to provide immediate treatment to the injured.”
