9-year-old girl commits suicide after being told to wash utencils
Police in Matugga, Wakiso district have launched investigations into an incident in which a nine -year- old girl committed suicide .
The lifeless body of Esther Zalwango, 9 was found hanging in the toilet at her residence in Kiryagonja, Matugga in Wakiso district. The deceased was living under the same roof with her grandmother Nakiwala Hadijah.
ASP Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson says Zalwango reportedly committed suicide after her grandmother asked her to wash utencils.
“It is alleged that the grandmother to the deceased told her to wash utensils. The deceased picked all the utensils and placed them on the verandah plus the water. The grandmother went to buy diapers but only to come back with no trace of Esther. As she went to the toilet, she found her hanging inside,”Owoyesigyire noted.
Owoyesigyire says the body was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue into the exact cause of the alleged suicide.
In January 2022, over three incidents of suicide have been reported by teenagers and children.
On January 09, an 18-year-old, Vin Karungi, from Kiranga village, Bweramule Sub-County in Ntoroko District committed suicide following a disagreement with her father over her recently acquired mobile smartphone. Karungi is said to have returned home with the phone and when asked by her father, Nestoli Kasagaki how she acquired it, she reportedly declined to disclose. Karungi later took poison in attempt to end her life and died in hospital.
On January, 10, Emmanuel Okello, 18,hanged himself outside the house after disagreeing with his father, Moses Opio over a new school he had been admitted. A senior four student at Makerere College School, Okello a resident of Parliament village- Kitukutwe, Kiwologoma, Kira Municipality, Wakiso District locked his father in the house before killing himself.
On January, 13, Moreen Nantume, 6 was found hanging on a cloth tied on the middle bed of a three-decker bed at around 6pm at Bweyogerere Centra Zone, Kira Municipality in Wakiso district by her brother.
The deceased had refused to return to a village school in Buikwe district that her father had planned to take her.
