Abenabo Nursery Kids go to school with Kitchen Stools; Causes stir
Nursery Kids at Abenabo, a farming community in the Suhum Municipality of the Eastern Region are facing challenges in their quest to access basic education.
These pupils and kids between the ages of 4 and 7 years are seen carrying kitchen stools and chairs belonging to their parents to school at the Abenabo Presby Nursery School. That is what they sit on to access education in their school due to the unavailability or lack of proper desks and chairs.
The situation sends a horrible picture of isolation of these kids we often regard as future leaders of the country. This this is how they are being deprived of quality education on the face of the fight for free universal basic education.
The school, though regarded as one of the oldest in the municipality, cannot even boast of a single chair for the kids in the community to make learning attractive.
Information available indicates that Kids who go to school without their kitchen stools end up sitting on the bare floor to study.
As a result, some of the Kids get infected with bacteria and easily fall sick and as a result, are unable to attend school regularly.
One of the Nursery Kid, Rose Adjatey, in an interview, expressed worry about their situation. According to her, “learning is not amusing in the school at all, due to the obstacles created by the unavailability of proper and adequate chairs and desks for learning “.
“We always have to carry our parents kitchen stools to school and carry it back when school closes. The funny this is our parents use the same chairs at home in the kitchen for their household chores,” she narrated.
The Odikro of the Abenabo Community, Nene Narteh Akrota II, described the situation as very terrible, with the view that it has negatively affected the academic performances of the school children.
“We have made several appeals to authorities to help us address the situation but to no avail” the Worried Chief stated.
“The Member of Parliament (MP) for Suhum, Oboafo Kwadwo Asante and the Suhum Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Margaret Darko, seem not concerned at all, after several appeals made to them to assist” he disclosed.
Nene Akrotia II therefore called on the Ghana Education Service (GES), MP for the Suhum Constituency, the Suhum MCE, Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO’s) and Individuals to come to their aid.
