WAEC Official dies during altercation with angry parents
A WAEC official, Mr. Joseph Agyemang, popularly known as Papa Bruno, is reported to have collapsed and died during heated exchanges with parents over withheld WASSCE results at the Sekondi office of the West African Examination Council (WAEC).
The incident occurred in the morning of Thursday, January 30, 2025, when frustrated parents and students who had been invited by WAEC for investigation had some confrontation with the Council’s officials.
According to Rev. Father Canon Wryter, who is a parent and a witness to the incident, the altercation began when WAEC officials asked affected students to come into a designated room in turns for questioning over the withheld paper without their parents. This did not go down well with the parents.
Tempers started flaring and the situation got escalated. In the midst of the exchanges, Agyemang collapsed while trying to address the parents.
“We were invited to go to the WAEC office with our affected children to answer some questions on the withheld results. I was given a chair in their office because of my position as a Rev. Father, but all other parents had no place to sit and looked stranded. During the altercation, one of the WAEC officials made a comment which the parents demanded an apology. The deceased was about to address the aggrieved parents but all of a sudden, he collapsed.
“Since I was closer to him, he fell on me and his situation got worse. He was quickly rushed to the Essikado Hospital but died shortly after,” he indicated while narrating the incident to Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning show on January 31.
Rev. Father Canon Wryter appealed to WAEC to resolve the issue promptly, as most universities have closed admissions, leaving affected students uncertain about their future.
“We are pleading with the government and WAEC to resolve the issue as soon as possible. The universities have closed admissions, and we do not know what is happening to our children,” he said.
