This is what Speaker told the President elect
On December 9, 2024, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, the Speaker of Parliament, congratulated John Dramani Mahama after his victory in the presidential election.
Mahama was declared the winner by the Electoral Commission (EC), marking his return to Ghana’s highest office.
In a heartfelt Facebook post, Bagbin celebrated Mahama’s win, calling it a crucial moment for the country.
He wrote, “Ghanaians have courageously and resoundingly reset the presidency to reset the nation. Congratulations, Your Excellency, John Dramani Mahama, President-Elect and Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces.
The God Almighty who brought you back will be your guide at this critical time that our nation is at its lowest point. Again, congratulations!”
Mahama’s victory was significant, as he secured 6,328,397 votes, or 56.55% of the valid votes, defeating his main opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), who received 4,657,304 votes (41.61%).
This landslide win also helped the National Democratic Congress (NDC) claim a strong majority in Parliament, with over 160 confirmed seats, including regions that were once dominated by the NPP.
The election had a voter turnout of 60.9%, and while there were a few incidents of violence and logistical challenges in constituencies like Damongo and Ablekuma Central, the overall election process was praised for its fairness and transparency by both local and international observers.
In his concession speech, Dr. Bawumia accepted the results and called for peace.
“We have fought a good fight. The people have spoken, and we must respect their decision,” he said, urging unity among his supporters.
For Mahama, this victory marked a major comeback. He had previously served as Ghana’s president from 2012 to 2016 but lost re-election bids in both 2016 and 2020.
This time, he will take on the responsibility of leading Ghana during a challenging period.
