“Don’t blame NAPO”, 2024 polls was a verdict on Akufo -Addo’s poor governance
Investigative journalist Manasseh Azure has urged Ghanaians and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) not to place sole blame on Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (Napo) for the party’s poor performance in the Ashanti Region during the 2024 elections.
He asserts that the election results reflect nationwide dissatisfaction with President Akufo-Addo’s governance over the past eight years, as reported by News Ghana.
Manasseh, in a social media post, acknowledged that Napo’s remarks and campaign strategies may have contributed to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s struggles but emphasized that broader issues were at play.
He argued, “The effect of bad governance is like rain; it doesn’t fall on only one roof. The whole country was angry.”
Citing economic hardships such as collapsed businesses, unfavorable exchange rates, and the impacts of domestic debt restructuring, he highlighted how these factors led voters across the nation, including in the Ashanti Region, to reject the governing party.
He questioned assumptions that Ashanti voters would prioritize regional loyalty over personal grievances, asking, “Are we saying they would fall for ethnic associations and act against their personal interest?”
Manasseh also pointed out that Ashanti, as a commercial hub, bore the brunt of economic challenges.
He argued that even with a strong regional figure as a running mate, voters affected by financial losses would not have been swayed. He concluded, “This election is a verdict on the worst president and government in the Fourth Republic.”
Manasseh maintained that focusing solely on Ashanti’s role misses the larger picture of the NPP’s nationwide electoral defeat.
