MTN celebrates 15 years of Momo experience in Ghana

The telecommunication network giant, MTN has celebrated 15 years of Mobile Money experience in Ghana.

The 15 year Momo anniversary which focused on the success chalked so far, was also meant to identify some setbacks and the way forward to curbing them.

Speaking at the gathering for the celebration in Kumasi, Mr. Adotey Mingle, the general manager for MTN Ghana Northern Business District, said, it was with great pleasure and excitement that all were gathered to reflect on the journey and to acknowledge the immense contribution each one has made to ensure the success of MOMO. “I say a very BIG AYEKOO!!! to every Ghanaian”.

Adding that when MTN embarked on this journey 15 years ago, the landscape of financial services in Ghana was vastly different.

“Traditional, banking services were inaccessible to a significant segment of the population, particularly those in rural and underserved areas. Many Ghanaians faced challenges in conducting basic financial transactions, which hindered economic growth and personal empowerment.

We recognized this gap and took on the challenge to make a meaningful difference by driving change and bringing financial services to the fingertips of every Ghanaian through the power of the mobile phone”.

Speaking on the theme for the year’s celebration, “Empowering Communities – Celebrating 15 Years of Progressive Financial & Digital Inclusion,” he said, it encapsulates the essence of what MoMo represents and the impact it has had on the lives of many and MoMo’s evolution and impact on society.

According to him MoMo was born out of a vision to democratize access to financial services. Adding that the goal, from its inception, was to leverage the power of technology to create a more inclusive financial ecosystem. “It started as a simple yet powerful concept”.

Touting its positive impact on the lives of almost every household in Ghana, he said, today, Ghana’s is one of the fastest growing markets in Africa for digital payments.

He said, MoMo has not just been about sending money and making payments but has expanded into other critical aspects of our daily financial needs such as offering loans, insurance, international remittance, investments and many more.

Talking about the MoMo’s role in shaping economic and community development, he said today, he said, MoMo is more than just a mobile money service. It is a platform that has empowered individuals, transformed businesses, and strengthened communities. “We have witnessed how MoMo has enabled small and medium-sized enterprises to thrive, by providing them with the tools they need to manage their finances more efficiently. We have seen how it has facilitated access to education, healthcare, and essential services, improving the quality of life for countless families. Also, access to government services has been simplified through the ubiquitous power of your MoMo enabling government agencies to collect taxes, levies and fees seamlessly.

Further acknowledging the important roles played by their partners such as agents, merchants and other stakeholders, he said despite the successes chalked over the last 15 years, there were still some challenges, and it was important to look at how they can be addressed collectively.

He said fraud remains one of the prevalent issues that continues to hinder their work of promoting digital and financial inclusion in the country.

“MoMo fraud is an issue we are very passionate about at Mobile Money LTD and we will continue to work with all stakeholders through sensitization and awareness initiatives and will continue to invest in robust security measures to combat it and protect our valued customers.

He emphasized that every customer remained the first and last line of defense, and that there was the need for everyone to protect their PINs and avoid clicking on unsolicited links, responding to fake SMS messages, or following the instructions of any random caller.

He finally disclosed that MTN remains committed to providing great customer experience to all their customers regardless of their location.
