High blood pressure can damage arteries over time, making them more susceptible to narrowing and hardening (atherosclerosis). Chronic hypertension can damage the kidneys› blood vessels and filters, leading to impaired kidney function or even kidney failure. Hypertension can cause damage to the blood vessels in the eyes, leading to retinopathy (damage to the retina) and potentially causing vision problems or even blindness.

The arteries supplying blood to the legs can become narrowed and hardened due to hypertension, increasing the risk of peripheral arterial disease. This condition can lead to pain, cramping, and reduced mobility. Persistent high blood pressure can weaken the walls of arteries, making them more likely to form aneurysms (bulges) that can rupture and cause severe internal bleeding.

Hypertension can contribute to erectile dysfunction in men and reduce libido in both men and women. High blood pressure is often associated with other metabolic abnormalities such as high cholesterol levels, elevated blood sugar, and excess body fat around the waist, collectively known as metabolic syndrome. This cluster of conditions increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Hypertension and sleep apnea often coexist. Sleep apnea can cause further increases in blood pressure and complicate the management of hypertension.

Over time, the strain on the heart from high blood pressure can cause the heart muscle to weaken and eventually lead to heart failure, where the heart can’t pump blood effectively throughout the body. Hypertension can contribute to abnormal heart rhythms (arrhythmias), which can lead to palpitations, fainting, or even sudden cardiac arrest.

There’s evidence suggesting a link between hypertension and increased risk of osteoporosis or bone density loss, particularly in postmenopausal women. Hypertension during pregnancy, such as preeclampsia, can pose serious risks to both the mother and the baby, including premature birth, low birth weight, and in severe cases, life-threatening complications.
