Ghana: Top 5 regions with the best roads, Number one on the list tells you something

Generally, most road networks in Ghana are considered to be in its poor state. The main cause of poor road networks in Ghana is mainly due to three factors; poor maintenance, poor construction works and poor driving skills of some drivers.

However, there are some good roads in Ghana that ensure the safe passage of all road users. In today’s article, we will be looking at five regions with the most beautiful roads in Ghana.

1. EASTERN REGION
Eastern region has the best roads in Ghana. Almost all highways in the region are asphalted. Most roads in the region leads to other regional capitals in the country. The government seem to have focused more on the development of the roads in Eastern regio than any other region in Ghana.

The Eastern Region of Ghana is located in the southern part of Ghana and forms one of the sixteen administrative regions of the country, with its capital at Koforidua. The Eastern Region is bordered to the east by the Lake Volta, to the north by the Bono East and Ashanti Regions, to the west by Ashanti region, to the south by Central and Greater Accra Regions. The Region has thirty-three (33) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) making up its administrative geography on its land area of 19,323 square kilometres.

In terms of road networks, the region has 7,147 kilometres of roads. The Eastern Region remains pivotal in the road transport space of Ghana; receiving and facilitating the freight and passenger movements and distribution across several regions of the country at any point in time. It has a section of the National highway 6 (N6) [Nsawam to Nkawkaw] as an important part of its road grid.

The National highway 2 (N2), National highway 3 (N3) and the National highway 4 (N4) also pass through the region. National highways are class of roads and highways that form the trunk routes between major urban centres.

2. GREATER ACCRA REGION
Greater Accra region is the second region with most better roads in Ghana. The region is where Ghana’s capital is located. For this reason, the government has channeled several resources into the development of the region. However, there are some towns and cities in the region that still lack roads. Aside this, the region seem to have better road networks, especially on its highways and main streets.

3. ASHANTI REGION
About 80% of all inner city roads in Kumasi has been asphalted. This shows the kind of roads Ashanti region has. The Ashanti Region is located in the middle belt of Ghana. It shares boundaries with Bono East Region to the North, Western Region to the West, Eastern Region to the East and Central Region to the South. The Ashanti Region is the most populous Region in Ghana with a population of over 6 million.

Administratively the Region is divided into Forty-three (43) Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs). These are one (1) Metropolis, eighteen (18) Municipalities and Twenty-Four (24) Districts. The NRSA will set up District Road Safety Committees at these levels to provide for road safety related services.

The National highway 6 (N6) and the National highway 10 (N10) pass through the region. National highways are class of roads and highways that form the trunk routes between major urban centres.

4. WESTERN REGION
The Western Region is located in south-western Ghana, with its capital in Takoradi. It is bordered on the west by the Western North Region and Ivory Coast, on the east by the Central Region and the Gulf of Guinea on the south.

The region is home to the country’s southernmost location, Cape Three Points, where crude oil was discovered in commercial quantities in June 2007.

5. CENTRAL REGION
Central region shares common boundaries with Western Region on the west, Ashanti and Eastern Regions on the north, and Greater Accra Region on the east. On the south is the 168-kilometre length Atlantic Ocean (Gulf of Guinea) coastline. Roads in the region seem bad. The good roads are all located in some district capitals. Road networks leading from one minor town to another minor town looks poor. However, major town roads looks asphalted. Example, Winneba to Mankessim to Cape Coast looks 100% asphalted. However, from Winneba to Agona Swedru, through to Agona Nsaba to other nearby towns looks poor.
