Three East African nations – Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania – have submitted a joint bid to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a move that could potentially bring the prestigious football tournament to the region for the first time in history.
The bid was officially received by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on April 12, 2023, and puts the East African trio in competition with three other nations – Algeria, Botswana, and Egypt – who have also expressed interest in hosting the tournament.
CAF will conduct inspection visits to each of the six bidding countries between June 1 and July 15 to evaluate their infrastructure, facilities, and overall readiness to host the tournament.
This will be a critical stage for the East African nations, who will need to showcase their ability to host a tournament of this magnitude, given that the 2027 AFCON is expected to feature 24 teams, up from the current format of 16 teams.
If Tanzania, Kenya, and Uganda are selected as hosts for the 2027 AFCON, it will be a historic moment for the region and a significant boost to their footballing ambitions.
None of the three nations have hosted the tournament before, and winning the bid would provide a much-needed injection of investment into their football infrastructure and raise their profiles on the continental stage.
The decision on the host nation(s) for the 2027 AFCON will be made by CAF at its Executive Committee meeting in September 2023, with football fans across Africa eagerly awaiting the outcome of the bidding process.
The AFCON, which is the premier international football tournament in Africa, has been held since 1957, with Egypt winning the most titles. The tournament features the top national teams from across the continent and is eagerly anticipated by football fans across Africa and beyond.
