“Erectile dysfunction” (ED) is the inability to get or keep the rise of the male organ firm enough to have intercourse. It is sometimes known as impotence, but this term is not used most often.
According to MayoClinic, in most cases, ED is caused by something physical. Common causes are:
1. Heart disease.
2. Clogged blood vessels (atherosclerosis).
3. High cholesterol.
4. High blood pressure.
5. Diabetes.
6. Obesity.
7. Metabolic syndrome, a condition that involves increased blood pressure, high insulin levels, body fat around the waist, and high cholesterol.
8. Parkinson’s disease.
9. Multiple sclerosis.
10. Certain prescription medications.
12. Tobacco use.
13. The development of scar tissue inside the male organ.
14. Alcoholism and other forms of substance abuse.
15. Sleep disorders.
16. Treatments for prostate cancer or enlarged prostate.
17. Surgeries or injuries that affect the pelvic area or spinal cord.
18. Low male hormone.
Also, the brain plays a key role in causing the series of physical events that lead to male organ rise, starting with feelings of intercourse excitement. Several things can interfere with intercourse feelings and cause or worsen ED. These include:
• Depression, anxiety, or other mental health conditions.
• Stress.
• Relationship problems as a result of stress, poor communication, or other concerns.
