Gov’t sets proposed rates for reintroduction of road tolls
The government has amended the schedules of the Fees and Charges (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 2022, (Act 1080).
This follows government’s intention to reintroduce the collection of tolls on some roads pending the completion of the steps to identify the roads and highways to be affected by the reintroduction of the tolls as slated in the budget.
Accordingly, the Ministry of Finance has initiated steps to provide for foundational rates for tolling of roads and highways as part of the amendments of the Act.
The Finance Ministry in a statement said, “we are by this letter conveying the proposed rates for input by the Ministry of Roads and Highways to enable this Ministry to complete the schedule of fees under the upcoming Legislative Instrument”.
The government stopped the collection of tolls across the country in November 2021 as part of policy measures announced in the 2022 Budget following the introduction of the controversial Electronic Transaction Levy. The decision by the government rendered road toll collectors unemployed.
The government is expected to start the collection of road tolls on selected roads in the country this year, 2023.
The Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta listed the reintroduction of the road toll as one of the revenue-generating plans in the 2023 budget submitted to Parliament in November 2022.
