2023: Jaman South municipal Nat’l Health Insurance Scheme holds 1st stakeholders engagement with assembly members, departmental heads

Yesterday, the Jaman South Municipal National Health Insurance Scheme held its first 2023 stakeholders’ engagement with Assembly Members and Heads of Department at the Jaman South Municipal Assembly hall.

Confidently, Jaman South National Health Insurance achieved its active membership target with 100.9% for the year 2022. The overall target for the 2022 was 109,000 and over 110,000 was achieved.

The Assembly members were surprised to hear that, NHIS covers 95% of all ailments in Ghana. 95% of all Out patient services, In patient services, oral services, maternity services, eye services and emergency services are all covered under the national Health insurance policy.

Subsequently, one of the major challenges the NHIS is facing in the Jaman South Municipality and other municipalities is the Co-payment the providers charge the subscribers or national health insurance members.

Some providers use a particular software called LHIMS which is foreign to National Health Insurance Authority and this software is used to collect illegal top ups from insurance members.

The vision of the Nation Health insurance in the Jaman South Municipality for 2023 is to embark on more public education on radio stations, public gatherings, social media, churches, mosques, community durbars, stakeholder engagements , institutional educations etc to educate the masses about diseases, medicines, laboratory tests etc that are covered under the insurance scheme.

This is the surest way of taking the national health insurance to the doorsteps of the people.

Co-payment is a threat to the sustainability of the national health insurance policy in Ghana and we must not allow it to destroy the only national asset in the country.
