The Ghana Chamber of Construction Industries has urged the government to declare revenue allocated for road construction from E-levy collection in 2023.

In courting public support for the passage of the E-levy Bill in 2022, the government stated that the revenue generated would be used to address the country’s unemployment rate and road construction.

Emmanuel Cherry, CEO of the Chamber, spoke to Citi News about the delay in paying road contractors.

“We hope that if the government does not embezzle money as it has done in the past, then 2023 will be a favorable year for the construction industry in terms of roads and other buildings. “With the approval of the VAT increase, I hope the government keeps its promise; however, we don’t yet know what percentage of the revenue from the e-tax has gone to the construction sector, so we need clarity,” he explained. Road contractors across the country have frequently complained about the government’s debt to them.

Kwasi Amoako-Atta, Minister of Roads and Highways, stated that the government will clear a “chunk” of outstanding debts owed to road contractors for work completed before the end of 2022.
