Over 3 million jobs created by Fisheries Industry – says Minister for Fisheries
The Fisheries Sector in Ghana employs about three million people directly and indirectly and also fetches the country an average of over US $ 200 million through export of fish products .
The Minister of fisheries and Acqua Culture Development Hon Mavis Hawa Koomson made these known in Parliament in a statement to mark World Fisheries Day .
The Minister cited climate change , marine pollution , plastic pollution and over exploitation of fisheries resources as some of the challenges affecting the fishing industry .
Mavis Hawa Koomson said government is taking various steps to addressing the challenges.
Contributing to the statement , Hon Eric Opoku the Minority Ranking Member on Food and Agriculture and MP for Asunafo South stressed the need to increase fish production in the country to meet the increasing demand for fish.
