The immediate past Chairman of the Christian Council of Ghana, Most Rev. Dr. Paul Kwabena Boafo, has asked illegal miners a.k.a. ‘galamseyers’ to desist from destroying the environment.

The man of God says indulging in something illegal is not the right means to seek wealth to contribute to the church.

According to him, mining activities have destroyed the environment such that, government needs to take drastic measures to curb the situation.

The Presiding Bishop of the Methodist Church Ghana was speaking after leading a group of clergy to some minning sites in the Eastern Region to access the extent of damage being caused to the forests and river bodies.

After Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye had led a prayer and asked that everyone come on board to reclaim lands lost to illegal mining, Most Rev. Boafo, who expressed shock at the level of devastation bemoaned how God’s command to man in the book of Genesis has been misapplied to cause mayhem in the country.

He emphasised that monies made from anything illegal is prohibited in the house of God.

“In Genesis God said tend it, care for it and in caring for it, this is not the way to care for it and I will say that, this is not the right way to go for wealth and bring to the Church, no!,” he said.

Minning activities in all forms have destroyed lands and river bodies questioning governments efforts and will at fighting to protect the environment.

Goal 15 of the Sustainable Development Goals, enjoins government to protect, restore, and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forest, combat desertification and halt and reserve land degradation as well as biodiversity loss by year 2030.
