Manchester United has hired lawyers to sue Cristiano Ronaldo for alleged breach of contract following claims made by the forward in a recent interview, with the club hoping for a quick resolution.
It is likely that Ronaldo will never play for United again, and the 37-year-old has been told not to return to the club’s Carrington training base after representing Portugal in the World Cup in Qatar.
Ronaldo made a series of allegations about Manchester United during an interview with Piers Morgan on Talk TV. He alleged that; the club is forcing him out, senior executives lacked empathy after his newborn son died in April, the owners, the Glazer family, do not care about the club, and the manager, Erik ten Hag, does not respect him.
According to a club statement issued on Friday:
“Manchester United has this morning initiated appropriate steps in response to Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent media interview. We will not be making further comment until this process reaches its conclusion.”
Ronaldo’s contract is worth around £500,000 per week and expires in July. United had no prior knowledge of Ronaldo’s planned departure in the summer. He is scheduled to arrive in Doha with the Portugal squad at 11 p.m. local time on Friday, ahead of the team’s first training session on Saturday afternoon.
Ronaldo is in his second stint at United after a phenomenal six-year run that ended in 2009 with him having won three Premier Leagues, the FA Cup, two League Cups, the Champions League, and the Ballon d’Or. His individual contribution made him a hero to United fans and ranked him among the club’s greatest players
Cristiano Ronaldo sued
Ronaldo’s return in the summer of 2021 was met with delight by fans and was hailed as a coup by Ten Hag’s predecessor, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. However, by going public with his claims against United Ronaldo, he has severely harmed his standing and status.
This followed his exit from the Rayo Vallecano friendly in July and the 2-0 league win over Tottenham in October. Despite this, Ten Hag named Ronaldo captain for United’s league game against Aston Villa on November 6, which they lost 3-1. This appears to be his final appearance for the club.
