Ernest Opoku – Young Ghanaian with kidney disease dies after spending 2k weekly on dialysis for 5 years.

Metro FM news presenter Pearl Shongwe passes on

A 38-year-old Ghanaian man, Ernest Opoku, has sadly passed away from kidney disease after five years of financially ruinous dialysis treatment.

Ernest was reported dead today, November 8th 2022, via a post shared on social media by Okay Fm.

Earlier this year, Abigail Ashley of Okay Fm chronicled Opoku’s struggle in a documentary.

He had been suffering from kidney disease since 2017 and has been spending a fortune every single week to receive dialysis treatment.

According to Opoku, he spends GH350 for dialysis, Gh180 for EPO IU/ml , Gh150 for Iron Sucrose treatments on a single session, which occurs three times a week!

He essentially spends Ghc 2,040 every week just to stay alive – and these costs are minus what else he spends on medication prescribed for him!

Opoku had been soliciting for funds to travel outside for a kidney transplant from as far back as 2018 but that apparently never materialised.

Today, Okay Fm reported the sad news of his death.

“5years on the Machine Still he couldn’t make it, 🥲 We Lost Ernest Opoku #restwell,” Okay Fm posted on Instagram.

Prior to falling ill, Ernest, who held an HND in Building and Construction, worked as a foreman. He later took to selling tailored African wear and authentic replica jerseys.

Watch him on the dialysis machine before passing on below.

May he rest in peace.
