Mayor for Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Hon Sam Pyne has given a 3-day ultimatum to operators of transport stations located at Adehyie market; opposite the Kumasi Zoological garden.

In a strongly worded statement, the City Boss has ordered the leadership of the union to dredge a stretch of drain situated just in front of their (transport operators) place of operation.

Any act of non-compliance to the directive as announced by Hon Sam Pyne will attract a stern and painful consequence; the closure of the stations.

“By Monday I will be here personally and if we notice that they have not done it, I will close the stations down”, he told the press during a clean-up exercise organized by the assembly on Saturday 30th July 2022.

Visiting the area as the exercise was ongoing, the drivers were busily getting their vehicles loaded with passengers whiles executives of the union were so relaxed, making no move whatsoever to partake in the clean-up exercise.

Addressing the media, Hon Sam Pyne expressed grave disappointment.

He brought to light that the assembly spends not less than GH 30,000 in each clean-up exercise.

“This is about the third time we have carried out a clean-up exercise since I assumed office. We spend not less than GHs 30,000 anytime we hold a single of such activity. Your transport area of operation is full of filth and instead of you joining hands with us in the exercise you have relaxed”, he roared.

Joining them in the foregoing unpatriotic conduct were food vendors who were also trading on pavements.

Some pedestrians were also spotted seated on benches and tables provided by the food vendors on pavement and were busily satisfying their appetite as disgusting odor from stinking gutters mixed with the passing air.

Confronting the situation, the city mayor instructed them to pack and leave the area after cautioning them on the dangers associated with trading in such places.

THE EXERCISE

The clean-up was carried out in places including Dr. Mensah, Kejetia, Adum, Central market, Bantama, Alabar among others.

Though most traders did not partake in the exercise, their shops remained closed until the activity was over. This the mayor underlined as one of the things the assembly hoped to achieve.
