Coffin makers threaten demo against KMA over eviction without notice

Aggrieved coffin makers at Asafo-Fante Newtown in the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) of the Ashanti Region have threatened to demonstrate against KMA for their failure to serve them notice before evacuation.

Clothed in reds with red bands to register their displeasure, the angry casket manufacturers told Silver FM’s Akwadaa Nyame on Tuesday, December 7, that, they were served with no notice prior to their eviction from their archaic place adding that they were only informed at their work place during working hours that, they should evacuate the place latest by the end of December to pave way for construction of stores and public place of convenience.

“We had knowledge about the development, we only came here this morning to carry out our activities and to our surprise, Asem Chief together with the Assembly member of the area came, telling us to vacate here by the end of December, 2021”, they stressed.

“We’ve been signaled that, the Asem Chief and the assembly member ‘our own assembly member’ is masterminding the agenda”, a coffin seller alleged explaining that, the Chief himself has told them (coffin sellers) point blank that, if they refused to adhere to the unannounced evacuation directive, they will be forced to leave the place.

To them, they are not enemies of progress but urging authorities to give them enough period before they effect the eviction process as they are alien to the directive.

The peeved coffin makers revealed that, they will embark on massive demonstration against the assembly and the stakeholders involve if they failed to heed to their grievances.

Disclosing their next line of action, they disclosed that they will petition Manhyia Palace i.e the Asantehene, Otumfuor Osei Tutu (II) for his intervention.
