A/R: Nurses rely on torchlights for deliveries
Nurses at the Ahenema Kokoben Health Centre in the Atwima Kwanwoma District of the Ashanti Region have to use phone torchlights during delivery.
According to Nana Adutwumwaa, the Middwife in-charge of the maternity ward of the facility, the challenge persists due to lack of a standby power plant, adding that the situation is affecting quality healthcare at the facility especially pregnant women who visit the place for deliveries.
She said, health officials would have to depend on cell phones torchlights whenever there is a power-cut.
She lamented over their lightening system being the major challenge to them crying out that, “using phone torchlight for deliveries is unprofessional in the service”.
However, Mrs. Adutwumwaa stressed that, delivering pregnant women in darkness is very bad as any foreign material may tamper with the process.
Nana Adutwumwaa unearthed to Silver FM’s Akwadaa Nyame during his visit to the health center on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, that, the Ahenema Kokoben health center serves numerous communities as it is the only government hospital in the area.
Surprisingly, the Midwife also disclosed that, nurses at the facility work under fear and panic conditions as some individuals mostly men intrude the facility to steal from them and at times try abusing and harassing nurses sexually because the center is unfenced.
“Some rascals pose as patients to come to the facility mostly at night to sexually harass us. I nearly became a victim without the immediate intervention of the security man on duty that very night”, Mrs. Adutwumwaa passionately disclosed.
She is therefore appealing to the powers that be to immediately provide them with a standby generator to save the situation from escalating and a fence wall to protect staffs.
“We love the profession so we want authorities to come to our aid”, she added.
